Accused turned witness in Joshlin Smith trial granted immunity

CAPE TOWN - Judge Erasmus, granted Lourentia Lombaard immunity from prosecution.

Lombaard was arrested and charged alongside Kelly Smith, Jacquen Appollis, and Steveno van Rhyn for the kidnapping of Joshlin Smith.

But she turned state witness, under section 204.

The key witness had a tough time in court during the proceedings of the case. At one point she was accused of lying by one of the defendant's lawyer. She had also fell ill during proceedings more than three times.

Lombaard is remembered breaking down in tears repeatedly as she faced grilling questions from lawyers of the accused. 

In her final bid to save her skin Joshlin's mother, Kelly, pined the disappearance of her daughter squarely on Lombaard.

"You played no active role in the trafficking and kidnapping of Joshlin Smith,” Judge Erasmus said, delivering his much anticipated judgement on Wednesday.

Lombaard, who has been in witness protection since turning State witness, left the courtroom smiling through tears.
