ActionSA files no confidence motion against Joburg mayor

The party says Johannesburg mayor Kabelo Gwamanda must come clean with the city’s residents, about the fraud allegations he's facing.

JOHANNESBURG - ActionSA has filed a motion of no confidence proposing to remove recently appointed Johannesburg mayor Kabelo Gwamanda.

The party says Gwamanda must come clean with the city’s residents, about the fraud allegations he's facing.

ActionSA's Funzi Ngobeni says this is the only way for him to be held accountable.

Ngobeni said, "We made a public call, to the mayor, to come clean. Basically, we were saying use the opportunity that you have when you deliver the state of the city to take residents into your confidence on all these allegations that are leveled against you."

"It seems like he didn’t take our call seriously."

"He delivered his speech and said nothing about the allegations but we need to hold him accountable. We know that he's been running away from media and engaging with councillors. This is the only instrument we can use to hold him accountable."

"Remains allegations that need to be tested."

"From a mayor of an economic hub of the City of Johannesburg, looking after a budget of R170-billion we cannot take it for granted these allegations are false or misguided."

"We can only ask him to explain them and for the past three or four weeks he's been running away, ducking and diving and yesterday he failed to live up to the expectations."

"So we are tabling this motion for that purpose, this mayor is not serious about taking the residents into his confidence about these allegations and he needs to be held accountable together with his coalition partners the ANC and the EFF."
