CAPE TOWN - The South African Red Cross’s Air Mercy Service has responded to over 60 emergency calls in the Western Cape this month.
These include mountain and sea rescues as well as transfers between hospitals.
Aeromedical personnel are on full alert as the second phase of the holiday season kicks off.
The AMS is contracted to the Western Cape Health and Wellness Department, and is the only aero-medical operator in the country that offers a complete package of air-ambulance, health outreach, and rescue services.
Twenty fixed-wing aircraft operations, thirty-one helicopter flights and thirteen sea and mountain rescues have been carried out in the province since the start of December.
Increased call volumes, particularly during these busy holiday periods, can stretch resources thin.
