Alleged rogue SAPS ballistics analyst case reaches turning point

PRETORIA - The State in the case against disgraced Captain Laurance Makgotloe believes it is ready to transfer the matter to the Regional Court.

This was heard when Makgotloe made a brief appearance in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Makgotloe has been charged with two counts of accessory to murder after the fact and the illegal possession of ammunition.

He is also accused of intentionally bungling ballistics reports to sabotage investigations into high-profile murders.

Makgotloe was assigned to analyse ballistics linked to the April 2024 assassination of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart.

The State alleges that instead of performing his duties, Makgotloe deliberately manipulated the results to ensure the suspects, alleged Big Five cartel member Katiso Molefe and three alleged hitmen, could walk free.

Subsequent investigations have now linked the firearms to several high-profile murders that include hits on DJ Sumbody, DJ Vintos and businessman Don Tindleni.

Makgotloe will be back in court on 21 October.
