PAARL - ANC NEC member David Mahlobo has urged South Africans to reject any attempts to subvert democracy or fuel racial polarisation.
The Water and Sanitation deputy minister joined a delegation marking Workers’ Day in Mbekweni, Paarl on Friday.
Cosatu Western Cape, the SACP, Denosa, and other unions gathered to highlight the challenges facing workers nationwide.
Speakers at Cosatu’s Workers’ Day celebrations used the occasion to address a range of issues, including disinformation, unity, and inequality.
DENOSA's Simphiwe Gada said Workers' Day is not an ordinary public holiday.
"It’s an international holiday that came through a lot of sacrifice from the employers, much respect this day, but it’s also important for the working class to regroup, sit together and reflect on the challenges, the losses, and the gains,” Gada said.
Melvern de Bruyn, COSATU's Western Cape secretary, said, "if one looks at the history of this particular Boland area, you can see unemployment is very high, and the biggest employer in this region is the farms, and when you go to farms, you see that the unemployment levels are very high.”
