ANC to review DA's role in GNU - Mbalula

JOHANNESBURG - ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said his party needs to re-look at the DA's role in the Government of National Unity.

It follows a ruling from the Constitutional Court on Thursday which ruled in the ANC's favour to have its candidates included on the ballot.

The party has been allowed to have its candidates contest the November local government polls.

Mbalula said that the DA's decision to challenge the nominations raises questions about its commitment to the principles that hold the GNU together.

"The founding statement of intent of government of national unity binds every partner to promote the constitutional framework of this Republic.

“To come to the Constitutional Court to argue against enfranchisement of hundreds of thousands of South Africans does not sit easily beside that understanding. There are matters comrades that this movement will now have to sit down and discuss,” Mbalula said.

Meanwhile, the DA has slammed the Constitutional Court's candidates list ruling.

DA's Johannesburg mayoral candidate, Helen Zille said the Constitutional Court judgment ‘makes no sense’ whatsoever.

Zille said ballot papers had already been printed, raising concerns about practical implications of the judgment.

“What they're basically saying, as far as I can see from the outside, is that the rules don't apply to the ANC. Which would create chaos, and it would also put the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) under impossible logistic constraints. They've printed most of the ballot papers," she said.

On Thursday, the apex court granted the ANC leave to appeal the Electoral Court’s ruling last month and set aside its order.

It ordered the IEC to take the necessary steps to include the party’s candidate lists and nominations on the ballot.

The dispute centred on the ANC’s candidate list submissions for six municipalities across KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State and the Eastern Cape.
