SOWETO - The ANC said it's focusing on Soweto after poor voter turnout in the past two elections.
The party said Cyril Ramaphosa’s visit intends to mobilise residents to come out in their numbers and vote for the party.
Chief Whip Mdumiseni Ntuli said strong support in the area is key to the party's performance in the upcoming elections.
"Soweto, in the past two elections, we have not done well in terms of the attendance. Not that there was any other political party which did better than us, but knowing that this is our historical base, we decided that the president will have to spend more time here.
"You might have noticed that maybe he's here now for the fourth, if not the fifth time, and we expect him to come back again before the election because we took a view that Soweto is very important, very significant.
"You cannot win to decisively unless we have done exceedingly well in Soweto. And that is why we thought the president, as the campaigning chief of the African National Congress, will have to spend more time here to complement the work that is done by both our provincial and regional structures to get the population of this area to vote. And I think the president is being received very, very well," Ntuli said.
