JOHANNESBURG - The ANC said Andile Lungisa, who hopes to become Mayor of Gqeberha, isn’t entitled to public office.
This follows Lungisa’s urgent court bid after the party dropped him from its list of potential councillors.
The High Court in Johannesburg heard the case this week. In a statement, the ANC called the legal fight "sorrowful”.
The party pointed to Lungisa’s criminal record as the key issue.
In 2018, he was sentenced to two years in prison for assaulting DA councillor Rayno Kayser with a jug.
The ANC said this record rules him out of public office.
Judgment has been reserved in the matter.
