'Asylum seekers won't be allowed to abuse the process' - Cachalia

DURBAN - Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia wants asylum status checks expedited, as he worries about people who might abuse the system.

He was speaking in Durban before protests broke out on Friday.

''We should not allow a situation where the asylum seeker process can be abused by people who are in the country illegally. So we need an expedited process.

“Nothing that the court has said interferes with our right to enforce our laws against illegal immigration. And that's what we are determined to do," Cachalia said.

The Department of Home Affairs has withdrawn a directive issued on 28 September concerning the intake of asylum seeker applications.

The directive followed a Constitutional Court judgment delivered on 7 July in the Scalabrini Centre of Cape Town matter.

The decision sparked violent protests in Durban and Soweto, with more than 20 cars torched.
