JOHANNESBURG - Seven off-duty JMPD officers have been attacked and four killed since last June.
The metro police’s Xolani Fihla said one of the latest shootings looks like a hit.
The motive for the attacks is baffling the department, since JMPD officers do not investigate criminal cases.
It's now trying to establish whether these attacks are personal or part of the wider violence gripping Johannesburg.
“Only this past week we saw three of our officers who were violently attacked. It has been happening for the past year. I know that from last year, let's say from June up until where we are right now, we've lost approximately four other officers due to violent attacks as well and those officers of course were also off duty as well.
“So it is a deep concern and not only just because it is JMPD officers, but a deep concern of the violent acts that we do see. One particular incident was definitely concerning because it did look like a hit because the officer had just knocked off, was still in his uniform and went to see the significant other and the officer was shot but his firearm wasn't taken.
“So it is something that we definitely have to look into whether it is either private affairs between the officers or just general violence within the city
