Auditor-General calls for urgent intervention in Joburg

JOHANNESBURG - Auditor General, Tsakane Maluleke, said the City of Joburg needs urgent attention and intervention.

The City operates through entities, including City Power, Pikitup and Johannesburg Water, that have received unqualified audit opinions for years.

"We do want to highlight that the City of Joburg needs ongoing attention from oversight as well as from the executive," Maluleke said.

"It's crucial that the institutional arrangements within Joburg be attended to. If we don't do that, we're going to continue on this slide where financial health deteriorates, which is what we're seeing, where service delivery continues to be compromised, which is what we are living."

Maluleke said the outcome for the core municipality is even worse, an audited opinion with findings.

This means the City is not producing financial statements that can be relied upon.

She said money is being spent on maintenance and infrastructure, but it's not being spent properly, to the detriment of residents.
