Beijing continues to gag dissent

BEIJING - Three Hong Kong activists are on trial for organising annual vigils for the 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy protesters.

For decades, the vigils commemorated the Tiananmen Square massacre where Chinese authorities killed hundreds of peaceful protesters.

The trio who led the now-dissolved Hong Kong Alliance each face up to 10 years in prison for inciting subversion of state power.

They've been jailed since 2021, and all but one have pleaded not guilty.

Authorities say the prosecutions safeguard national security.

But human rights groups warn the trial attempts to suppress resistance.
