PRETORIA - The Department of Correctional Services says convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester and alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala were transferred to Kokstad due to security concerns.
Both have been moved to eBongweni Super Maximum Prison in Kokstad. Correctional Services National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale said the transfers were necessary to safeguard both inmates and prevent security risks.
Thobakgale briefed the media on Monday.

"The transfers of inmate Cat Matlala and Thabo Bester were informed by this security and threats analysis. I will not go into details of such information. It is with good reason for the safety of both inmates, apart from ensuring that safety and security in the correctional system is not undermined by any activity associated with both inmates,” Thobakgale said.
He emphasised that offender transfers are a routine practice and guided by established security risk assessments.
