GQEBERHA - Steve Biko's family has brought an urgent court application to stop the inquest into the death of the late Black Consciousness Movement leader.
Judge Isaac Madondo in the Gqeberha High Court is hearing the matter.
Initially, Legal Aid South Africa said they would not be able to provide assistance to the Biko family.
When the Department of Justice agreed to do so, the family asked for the matter to be postponed so they could prepare.

This includes translating written records of the first inquest in 1977 from Afrikaans to English.
The judge declined the request on the basis that it would not be wise to delay the matter any further.
Now the family has brought a formal application for the proceedings to be temporarily stopped.
They also want a new judge.
