Boksburg blast death toll rises to 15

The death toll from the Boksburg gas tanker explosion has risen to 15.

JOHANNESBURG - The death toll in the Boksburg gas tanker explosion has risen to 15.

Saturday's horrific incident left several others critically wounded, including firefighters.

The truck got stuck under a low bridge and caught fire.

The blast also caused extensive damage to the Tambo Memorial Hospital.

Health Minister Joe Phaahla visited the hospital on Sunday.

He confirmed that three hospital workers are among the dead.

"We want to take this opportunity and pass our condolences to the families. We are informed that amongst the deceased there are also children, so it is adults and children," the minister said.

"It is indeed tragic to lose family members. It is even worse on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

"Three of those who have passed away are also staff members of the hospital," he said.
