Firoz Cachalia says drug trafficking networks, including foreign cartels, are worsening the crisis in communities.
"I think we need to go back to the drug plan that was adopted many years ago, the drug master plan, to see how we can improve its implementation, because that is at the core of the devastation in our communities," he says.
Adding to the issue of drugs is gang violence which Cachalia emphasised that the South African Police Service has a revised strategy to fight crime and gang violence.
He says the strategy has a lot of different elements, and the government is allocated funding for its implementation.
"The violence has intensified now in parts of Gauteng, so we have to make sure that that strategy is implemented in all four provinces where the gang violence is growing," he says.
