JOHANNESBURG - A baby rhino at the brink of death has now taken its first steps towards hope.
The calf was found severely dehydrated and alone in the northern region of the Greater Kruger.
A late-night rescue was launched and the little one is now recovering at the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary.
She's managed to stand on her own and is drinking by herself.
Conservationists say this is a big step for the 400kg baby that needs up to 40 litres of fluid per day.
Wildlife conservationist and founder of the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary says they were dealing with a fighter who wanted to live.
"Our rangers found her wondering alone and she tried to link up with other Rhinos but dd not take it well and maybe chased her away. Maybe at that stage she was looking for comfort and some food," she said.
