Cape Town gangs | 'Mass murders are common'

CAPE TOWN - Allegations by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi of corruption and collusion with criminal elements within the top ranks of the police have prompted action from President Cyril Ramaphosa.

However, this is not the first time such serious concerns have been raised.

Three years ago, a High Court judge made similar revelations about the police in the Western Cape, leaving the Premier’s Office frustrated by its inability to uncover the full extent of the rot.

Since then, gang violence in the province has escalated to alarming levels, with mass murders becoming commonplace and almost all of them linked to gangsterism and extortion.
