Carrim's lawyer calls Madlanga Commission questioning a fishing expedition

PRETORIA - North West Businessman, Suleiman Carrim's lawyer has argued that allegations against his client are beyond the commission's mandate.

During proceedings, Carrim's lawyer, Rafik Bhana said the commission had made loose statements.

These involving his client with Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala, and businessman Hangwani Maumela's alleged involvement in tender frauds as well as possible proceeds of crime.

Bhana argued that such claims went beyond the scope of the inquiry.

“We say it is a fishing expedition, and an attempt to embarrass this witness through matters that have got nothing to do with this commission. It’s entirely outside the scope of this inquiry, and if this line of questioning is permitted,” the Bhana told the commission.

He further submitted that allowing such questioning would mean the commission is acting contrary to the rule of law and the principle of legality.

Carrimi was testifying at the Madlanga Commission of inquiry.  The Commission has rejected Carrim's application to testify in-camera.
