Classrooms crumble as cash sits in coffers

NGQUSHWA, EC -Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube has made it clear there are no excuses for Eastern Cape education departments that ignore the infrastructure backlog. 

An estimated R5 billion has been withheld from non-fee-paying schools in the province since 2020.

The Eastern Cape Education Department says it has built over a hundred schools in the past five years, and that some of the funding has been used to refurbish crumbling institutions. 

However, some schools say they aren't getting sufficient funding.
