JOHANNESBURG - The Mohlakeng and Thembisa old ages homes are state-of-the-art facilities, meant to provide crucial care to the most vulnerable.
But they stand as desolate white elephants.
Gauteng's social development department spent millions to construct the facilities, and has spent millions more to maintain them. Both old age homes are set to reopen in August.

In Mohlakeng, however, not everyone is convinced processes have been followed correctly. In Thembisa, unemployed residents are desperate to work at the home.
Calls are growing for the facilities to operate without anymore delay.
As the department moves forward with the admission process, residents hope the facilities will provide much-needed care and support to the elderly.
