Cops and robbers clash in Sandton

JOHANNESBURG - A suspect has been arrested after a high-speed car chase by police in Johannesburg for attempted armed robbery.

According to police, their Highway Patrol unit received information about a white Toyota Corolla, allegedly involved in an attempted armed robbery of a guest near a hotel in Sandton on Thursday afternoon.

"The members then mobilised Johannesburg Metro Police and private security to trace the suspects. While driving on Katherine Street, the team spotted the vehicle with three occupants," police said in a statement.

"The police attempted to stop the vehicle, but it sped off, and a chase ensued. With the team in pursuit, two of the suspects jumped out and fled on foot. The team continued to chase the vehicle, which then bumped into a truck and came to a halt. The driver of the vehicle got out and tried to run, but the police gave chase and caught him a few meters from the scene.

"Upon searching the vehicle, police recovered two unlicensed pistols, ammunition and gloves. The team also discovered that the vehicle had been cloned, and it was hijacked in Daveyton in February 2026."

The suspect will be facing charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as reckless and negligent driving.

Police said the tracing of the two escaped suspects is underway.
