Copyright Act | Big court win for visually impaired

The Act blocks books from being converted to accessible formats for the blind without permission of the copyright holder.

JOHANNESBURG - Section27 and Blind SA are celebrating a landmark court ruling declaring the Copyright Act unconstitutional.

This is because it blocks books from being converted to accessible formats for the blind without permission of the copyright holder.

Section27 argues this creates a book famine for the visually impaired.

Section 27's Demichelle Petherbridge said, "it was never really about the conversion process."

"In terms of the Copyright Act, you had to get permission from the copyright holder."
