Cost of living | DA demands government cushion rising inflation

PRETORIA - The Democratic Alliance is calling on Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana to expand the basket of basic food items that are zero-rated during his Mid-Term budget next Wednesday.

The party marched to the offices of National Treasury in Pretoria on Friday to hand over a memorandum of demands.

It's accusing government of not doing enough to mitigate the economic crisis, saying many families are already struggling to put food on the table.

"What we are asking the Minister to do is to cut VAT in a number of additional food items in the basket that the poorest -- 50 percent -- of South African households buy," said DA MP Dion George.

"We want the minister to cut the fuel tax because it is possible and that it will make petrol less expensive."

The DA also made suggestions to government on ways to raise funds for the food bill.

The memorandum was received by Treasury Deputy Director General, Stadi Mngomezulu, who promised to deliver it to Godongwana.
