Crackdown on power theft in Kya Sands

JOHANNESBURG - Authorities have said a sophisticated electricity theft syndicate is operating in Kya Sands, Randburg.

On Tuesday, City Power and law enforcement agencies moved into the Msawawa informal settlement, targeting a network allegedly built using stolen electrical infrastructure.

They uncovered a sophisticated network involving transformers, mini-substations and cables believed to have been stolen from City Power and Eskom.

The illegal connections were removed during the crackdown.

Residents in the area said they’ve been paying the syndicate R400 a month for electricity.

Officials said they are investigating whether the syndicate involves some of their own.
