JOHANNESBURG - Political Analyst Brutus Malada said government has missed an opportunity to address South Africa's migrant problems.
He said the recent protests would have been a perfect opportunity for the state to tackle the crisis.
Thousands of demonstrators marched this week, calling for undocumented migrants to leave South Africa.
“With the kind of protests we have witnessed, they have put the issue of migration in the spotlight and this would have been an opportunity for government to say these are the measures that we’re going to put in place to resolve the crisis and to strengthen our migration processes.
“We need quick action, strengthening and tightening up our borders. You need to resolve the humanitarian crisis that is building up, but you also need to be forward planning and say beyond this protest what are we going to be able to do and I think this is where government has missed an opportunity.”
