JOHANNESBURG - The DA is targeting a stronger showing in eThekwini in the local government elections.
The party faces stiff competition from the MK Party, while the ANC is hoping to reclaim lost ground in the metro.
eNCA elections analyst Wayne Sussman said the DA will need to mobilise its support base and ensure voters turn out in large numbers.
"The areas like Chatsworth and Phoenix, where a lot of Indian voters live, they just be far more competitive. Over the last few elections, the DA has really consolidated that support and they haven’t got that many suburban competitors.
"The question is, can they motivate their voters to go out and vote? Because in 2024 there was a lot of excitement about Chris Papas, but the excitement amongst DA support for Chris Papas paled into comparison for the excitement for Jacob Zuma. The DA’s differential turnout didn’t really pay dividends. However, they will be happy with these numbers. And it would be interesting to see how close they can finish to uMkhonto we-Sizwe.”
