JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance has asked President Cyril Ramaphosa to authorise a Special Investigating Unit probe into an alleged R2BN revenue shortfall in the City of Ekurhuleni.
The party said recent reports suggest cybercriminals, allegedly working with city officials, manipulated the metro’s electricity billing system, erasing debt, lowering charges, and issuing fake payment invoices.
The DA said the alleged scheme has severely damaged the city’s finances and could threaten service delivery.
According to the letter, city officials told Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts that hackers exploited weaknesses in the city’s ICT systems for an extended period.
The case has also been linked to the murder of city employee Mpho Mafole, who was reportedly investigating the corruption before his death.
The DA now wants the SIU to launch a full investigation into the allegations.
