DA's Steenhuisen outlines party proposals for poverty relief

JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance says immediate action is required to assist the needy.

They have released a five-point plan on urgent steps that can be taken to ease the plight of the very poor.

Party Leader John Steenhuisen says moves like adding more protein-rich items to the VAT exemption list could improve food security and still be accommodated in the medium-term budget.

"Some of the other things that government can do immediately ahead of the MTBPS is, for instance, dropping import tariffs on cuts of chicken but also on things like pasta which are generally low energy, used to cook and are able to bulk up meals substantially," he said.
