Defence Committee satisfied with living conditions in Ford Ikapa Military Base

CAPE TOWN - Parliament's Joint Standing Committee on Defence says the living conditions at Fort Ikapa Military Base in Cape Town are adequate.  

Committee members claim media reports suggesting nearly 150 soldiers are living in inhumane conditions are fabricated and undermine the South African National Defence Force.

In a statement, the co-chairperson said that while they did not expect hotel-like accommodation, what they witnessed met the standards reasonably expected under the circumstances.

The soldiers have been deployed as part of Operation Prosper aimed at tackling gang violence and illegal mining.
