Desperation lead residents to plead for dirty water

HAMMANSKRAAL - A few more days. That's the promise to Hammanskraal residents still waiting for clean water to run from their taps.

However, the government missed its own deadline to have the Klipdrift Water Treatment Works fully operational. It handed over module two in June, but the plant is still not pumping clean water.

"The team is working tirelessly, and we are winning the war. By the deadline, they will get clean water," Tshwane Deputy Mayor, Bonzo Modise made a promise last month.

Many areas remain dry, making residents so desperate that they are now pleading for the return of contaminated water.

"We no longer want the trucks. We want the water that was coming out of the taps, as dirty as it is. It’s been years of drinking that water because we are treated like pigs, so we want it back," one resident said.

While desperation grows on the ground, the blame game also continues.

The Tshwane Mayor’s office says he is not available for comment, referring us instead to the MMC for Utilities, Frans Boshielo.

He, in turn, points us to Magalies Water and the Department of Water and Sanitation.
