DISCUSSION | Lizette Lancaster from ISS weighs in on 2021 July unrest

JOHANNESBURG - Four years later since the July 2021 riots and calls to hold those accountable for inciting this violence continues. 

Among those who have been vocal about the need for more accountability is Institute for Security Studies (ISS).

Speaking to eNCA Lizette Lancaster from ISS said the riots were well planned and orchestrated with series of events that were created through mobilastion in order to disrupt provinces like Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

Lancaster said the riots were a type of insurrection that can not go unpunished. 

Lancasters was speaking in light of former president Jacob Zuma’s daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla apprearance in court for her alleged involvement in the July 2021 riots.

The former president's imprisonment for contempt of court triggered violent protests and the looting of shops in KwaZulu-Natal and some parts of Gauteng

Zuma-Sambudla is accused of encouraging violence through her social media posts.
