Discussion | NCC sends notices to non-compliance suppliers

JOHANNESBURG - The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued notices to the suppliers of goods across the country.

The NCC discovered that some suppliers were selling expired and spoiled food items.

These include dairy products, meat products, maize meal, eggs, snacks, biscuits and noodles.

A total of 45 suppliers were found not compliant.

NCC says these inspections serve as a method to stop the sale of unsafe goods to consumers.

Head of Complaints and Investigations  Prudence Moilwa says the commission has been hard at work to clamp down on practices that violate consumer rights.

"We have gone on a spree wherein we have been monitoring the markets, conducting inspections to check on compliance.

"The first visit would be to warn them that they are contravening the law, and the second involves investigating compliance after the first visit. The outcome of that would be recommendations to issue compliance notices," she said.

Moilwa said investigators must return to the businesses to follow up on the notices.

If they adhere to the compliance requirements, they are issued a certificate, but if they fail, the matter will be escalated to the National Consumer Tribunal.
