Durban woman shot dead in alleged water dispute

DURBAN - A Durban family is blaming a relative's death on the city's failure to deal with its water crisis.

Hloniphile Mkhabela was killed on Monday night over a dispute over water at a Phoenix communal tank.

Her funeral will be held in northern KwaZulu-Natal this weekend.

"It’s alleged that the victim was collecting water when an unknown man came to the tank to collect water also," said police spokesperson Jay Naicker.

"A dispute then arose between the deceased and this unknown man and following the argument the man went to his car, he fetched his firearm and he shot the deceased several times.

"He then also shot the JoJo tank and then jumped into his car and fled."

The Mkhabela family feels her death could have been avoided.

The SAPS says no arrests have been made yet.
