Ekapa Mine management is not updating families on rescue efforts

KIMBERLEY - Five mineworkers remain underground following a mudslide on Tuesday.

It's feared they may be dead due to rising water and unstable ground conditions hampering rescue efforts.

But some of the families of the victims said the mine has not given them any support of any kind.

Maritsa Coetzee's husband is among those trapped, but she hasn't heard from the mine since the accident.

In fact, she said she is being treated with rudeness and arrogance.

"At this point you won't believe it, since Tuesday up until now, I haven't had a single word on news or anything from the mine itself. I even went to my lawyer so my lawyer could contact the mine and the mine said they would call me back and I never received a call back.

“And when I called the mine late yesterday afternoon, late Friday afternoon when I called the mine, they were so rude and so arrogant towards me and told me that they have informed the families and that the families are at the mine. I am in Lichtenberg, I am not in Kimberley now, so yeah, I haven't had any news from the mine itself to me."
