The unrest follows evictions in the nearby Pharoe Park area.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the Germiston Home Affairs building fire.

It's understood community members protesting over evictions, are responsible for starting the blaze.

One resident who has lived in the building for 19 years says she has paid rent every month.

She says she did not receive notice of the evictions.

Authorities allege the residents are occupying the homes illegally, but the families insist they hold valid City-issued documentation and have been paying rent consistently.

Officials say those making these claims will have the chance to correct their status, but warn that instigators of illegal occupation will be tracked down.
