Election Day warning | Police say criminals will be dealt with accordingly

JOHANNESBURG - “No excuses will be entertained when crime is committed."

This was a stern warning issued by Deputy National Commissioner for Policing Tebello Mosikili during a media briefing on Tuesday evening.

The briefing centred around security readiness for the 2026 local government elections scheduled for Wednesday.

Mosikili vowed that police and other law enforcement agencies will act decisively against criminality during the elections.

On Monday and Tuesday, between 8am and 5pm, voters approved for special votes cast their votes, but the two days were not without incidents.

According to Mosikili, the security environment recorded incidents that required the attention of law enforcement agencies and operational teams

One of the incidents she pointed to was the killing of a uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party regional leader in KwaZulu-Natal.

Mosikili said investigations into the matter continue.

Equally, she said the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) has been seized with these matters and will provide necessary investigative support.

“We are confident that the investigating team will pursue available leads to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.”

Political parties, their leadership, as well as supporters have also been called to exercise political tolerance and restraint during the voting process.

“Political differences must never translate into violence, intimidation or the loss of lives. We further caution anyone who may be contemplating acts of violence, assassination or any other criminal activity during this electoral period that our law enforcement agencies remain vigilant and will act decisively against criminal conduct,” she said.
