JOHANNESBURG - Eskom says falling demand has left it with surplus electricity as more consumers turn to renewable energy.
The utility is now looking for new ways to use that capacity, including selling more power to neighbouring countries and data centres.
But finding new customers is only part of the challenge.

Eskom chairperson Mteto Nyati says it also needs to bring down its costs and keep electricity affordable if it wants to attract more industrial demand.
Nyati says cheaper power could help convince companies to invest and expand in South Africa.
"There is a big focus that we have given to our management within Eskom to take out R112 billions of costs. And that's going to be a massive push. We gave them the target last year. We are managing it like we had managed the load shedding. And this year, they were able to exceed the cost savings. And that is a good direction we should be taking," Nyati said.
Nyati maintains the importance of delivering, maintaining and ensuring that energy is affordable for consumers, and that it becomes affordable for industry as well.
