Ethekwini Municipality races to plug water leaks

DURBAN - eThekwini says it's tackling water leaks and illegal connections to avoid more supply curtailment.

Millions of litres are being lost as the metro struggles to offer households stable water supply.

Using dedicated plumbers, the city says it has managed to plug some of the leaks. But there’s still a lot to do in high-loss and densely populated areas in the city.

The city is also struggling with illegal water connections which they vow to disconnect

Experts say innovative technology could help fix the leaks plaguing the system and reduce the 56 percent non-revenue water loss.

A water leak detecting device, already in use in private properties, is among the considerations.

Once the actuator, and flow sensor is installed in the pipeline, the user can monitor their water usage and detect leaks through a mobile app.

The cloud-based system also enables users to open and close water flow at the touch of a button.

The hope is that the municipality's new measures will see less water wasted and more flowing out of taps
