Experts warn against lying under oath as cops probe Mogotsi's alleged hit

JOHANNESBURG - The alleged assassination attempt on controversial North West political figure Brown Mogotsi has raised more questions than answers.

Mogotsi has finally spoken to police, but investigators have not ruled out the possibility, that the incident could have been staged.

Legal expert Zola Majavu warns that if Mogotsi's claims are found to be false, he could face serious legal consequences.

"So if it turns out that which he said under oath is untruthful, he will be charged with perjury, which is a serious charge because lying under oath is indeed serious,"he said. 

Majavu added that authorities could also consider charges related to obstructing the course of justice. 

"Whether or not you may be liable for wasting state resources, it is a matter that could be possibly considered under the civil law type of procedure because it is, would be unacceptable, it will be reckless, it will be irresponsible,"Majavu said. 

Gauteng police spokesperson Athlenda Mate confirmed that investigations continue.
