Families feel betrayed by lack of justice for apartheid era crimes, says Calata

JOHANNESBURG - Families of unprosecuted apartheid era crimes emanating from the Truth and Reconciliation say the Khampepe Commission is their only hope for justice and closure.

Lukhanyo Calata, the son of murdered struggle stalwart Fort Calata, says justice has to be a central pillar in building a society that freedom fighters fought for.

He's been testifying at the TRC Cases Inquiry in Johannesburg.

A group of families whose loved ones were killed by the apartheid regime are seeking justice and closure.

Calata says families of the victims feel the democratic government's failure to prosecute TRC apartheid era crimes is a betrayal.

Meanwhile, one of the TRC Commissioners who compiled and presented a final report to former President Thabo Mbeki is expected to testify on Tuesday.
