Family waiting for answers nearly three years on

HEIDELBERG - A Heidelberg family is demanding answers nearly three years after their son’s death.

Dylan Bothma died in hospital after he was found critically injured on a roadside on 24 June 2023.

His family alleges he was assaulted at a 16th birthday party.

No arrests have been made, but the family's fight for justice is gaining momentum.

Riders from across Gauteng answered a call for justice for 18-year-old Dylan Bothma.

Willie van Zyl of Wing Mates said, “The public wants to know what happened to this boy, how he died. We need to get justice; we need to solve this case. Two and a half years, it's unacceptable."

Dylan’s mother, Elsie Bothma, alleges a dispute at a party led to the horror attack and his ultimate death.

“From there, he was chased and beaten again, and here where we are is what happens. Dylan jumped off the van. He ran over the road as he got to the other side, and they also chased him. They beat him up. They pushed him in front of a tow truck, the tow truck bumped him, and left him in the road. The people just went back. They didn't phone the ambulance or the police, and another car driver ran over my child, and they dragged him for 25 metres.”

Russel Bothma, Dylan’s grandfather, said he will never stop fighting for his grandson.

“We are astonished by the way the SAPS have handled this case, and we will not let it lie down. I will see the Minister. I will escalate this to the highest level I can.”

Police said a case of culpable homicide and assault was opened.

The dockets are now with the NPA who will decide whether to prosecute.
