CAPE TOWN - The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) said it’s buckling under R2.1 billion in student debt.
The university has now proposed a financial recovery plan aimed at tackling the crisis.
But the CPUT student representatives have opposed the temporary withdrawal of the 2027 financial recovery plan.

According to SRC member Ababalwe Bangiso, the plan seeks to disadvantage poor students.
Planned talks to resolve student issues at CPUT collapsed on Thursday, before they even began.
Now, the SRC accuses the university of negotiating in bad faith.
Classes remain suspended as the SRC refuses to back down on its demands.
The higher education department said it's working to ensure that classes resume.
