Food safety | Food manufacturers under scrutiny

JOHANNESBURG - As spaza shop owners race against the clock to register their businesses, food manufacturers are now under scrutiny by authorities.

This follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement of stricter health inspections aimed at preventing the misuse of the chemical terbufos and strengthening food safety controls.

In his address last Friday, Ramaphosa gave spaza shop owners 21 days to register their businesses, warning that those who fail to comply risk having their shops shut down. 

He also ordered the immediate closure of spaza shops linked to recent child fatalities.
