Food safety | Probe into source of Terbufos continues

JOHANNESBURG - Investigations into the source of the Terbufos that was linked to the deaths of six children in Naledi in Soweto last year are continuing.

The children died after eating contaminated snacks from spaza shops..

The chemical is widely used in the agricultural sector for pest control but found its way into urban areas.

In total, over 20 children died after eating foods purchased at their local shops.

In response, several measures were announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa including getting hazardous pesticides off the street.

Dipepeneneng Serage, the DDG for Agricultural production, Regulatory Services, Biosecurity, Natural Resources and Disaster Management at the Agriculture Department, said the process is still ongoing.
