Four years since deadly 2021 July riots

JOHANNESBURG - It's been four years since the July 2021 unrest, a week of looting, destruction, and chaos.

The violence began on this day in KwaZulu-Natal and quickly spread to Gauteng, lasting eight days.

Shops were looted, businesses destroyed, and vital infrastructure damaged.

More than 300 people died, and the economic toll soared into the billions of rands.

The unrest erupted shortly after former president Jacob Zuma was arrested for contempt of court, following his refusal to appear before the state capture commission.
