Freezing temperatures grip most parts of SA

JOHANNESBURG - Grab your jackets because freezing temperatures are sweeping across South Africa. 

Rare snowfall is expected in Gauteng and other parts of the country.

The South African Weather Service says this the extreme winter weather, is due to a powerful cold front, combined with a cut-off low-pressure system.

Widespread snowfall accompanied by heavy rain, and plunging temperatures, are forecast for most provinces with the exception of Limpopo.

The intense weather system is expected to continue until midweek.

Emergency services have now been placed on high alert.
