Gang violence continues in some areas on the Cape Flats

CAPE TOWN - Despite the presence of the SANDF, gang violence continues in some areas on the Cape Flats.

Shootings have been reported in Mitchells Plain, Manenberg, Lotus River, Delft, and Elsies River just days into Operation Prosper.

Bishop Lavis police registered four counts of attempted murder following a shooting incident in which four males were wounded in Kalksteenfontein this afternoon.

In one incident, the community took the law into their hands and stoned an alleged shooter to death.

Mitchells Plain community activist Michael Jacobs said there needs to be SAPS-led intelligence operations in order to find guns and drugs.

“While the army was in Mitchells Plain, they were shooting in Elsies River, they were shooting in Lotus River, in Delft, Hanover Park, in all of these areas. So you need to have a plan that will say we will target multiple areas and not send all your members to Mitchell’s Plain to have a public show.”

“We want a force that is going to make a difference on the ground and bring stability to our communities. Not a circus.”

On Good Friday, a man was shot dead in Delft, with others injured.

Community activists in Manenberg said they thought there would be more soldiers on the ground for a longer period.

“That was our expectation that they were going to be here, patrol, be visible, so that our communities can have the sense of safety,” Manenberg community activist, Vernon Visagie.
