Gauteng Health reports over 7,000 infections at hospitals

Over 7,500 patients picked up an infection in Gauteng's public hospitals, in the last year.

JOHANNESBURG - Nearly 7,500 patients picked up an infection in Gauteng's public hospitals, in the last year.

In addition, this has been blamed mostly on poor infection controls at these health institutions.

These figures were revealed by Gauteng Health and Wellness MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko in a written reply to the DA's question in the provincial legislature.

Some of the affected hospitals include Chris Hani Baragwanath, Steve Biko Hospital, Charlotte Maxeke and Helen Joseph Hospitals.

The DA says the figures show the need for tighter infection controls and proper hygiene to minimise the problem.
