GBV epidemic | SA has no regard for lives of children, says NPO

Police Minister Bheki Cele revealed that over 500 children have been killed in just six months.

JOHANNESBURG - If the recently released crime stats are anything to go by, then South Africa is not a safe place for children.

Police Minister Bheki Cele revealed that over 500 children have been killed in just six months and over 1,000 assault cases were opened in which children are victims.

Non-profit organisation Women and Men Against Child Abuse says the crime stats are devastating but not surprising.

"What these crimes against children tell us is that we have very little regard for the dignity or the lives of children," said Luke Lamprecht.

"The vast majority of the major cases that I have given evidence in, these children have been tortured to death over a period of time by their caregivers."
